What Is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is the most well-researched
treatment for PTSD. It works on the principle that trauma gets stored in the brain
differently than ordinary memory — frozen in the body, full of sensory detail,
disconnected from the part of you that knows it's over. EMDR helps your brain finish
processing what didn't get to be processed.
Practical Things to Know:
You don't have to talk through every detail of what happened. EMDR works
without that. It's faster than talk therapy alone for many people.
It can be done over telehealth and works well that way.
It's not hypnosis. You stay fully present and in control the whole time.
What We Won't Do
We won't rush. EMDR done badly can be destabilizing. Before we touch any traumatic
material, we'll spend time on resourcing — making sure you have the internal stability
to do this work. Some clients are ready in two sessions. Some take eight. We move at the pace your nervous system can handle.
